Herod the Troll

Here is a story I wrote last Christmas for CITB. It is a creative rendition of Matthew chapter 2.

Once upon a time, in a far away land their lived three fairies Dusty, Lime, and Whisker. One night these three fairies saw a very strange sight. They looked up and saw a very large star. This caused a great murmur amongst the fairies.
“What do you think this can mean?” said Dusty to the other two fairies.
The two fairies chimed together, as fairies often do, “It is a sign that a king is born!”
“Can we go visit the king?” asked Dusty.
“Yes!” replied the two fairies.
The fairies were very excited to go on a trip, because fairies love to travel. They went about their homes packing for the long journey ahead. Each fairy climbed up to the tip-top point of the great cedar tree they called home. The tip-top point is where fairies are know to hide there most valuable possessions. Dusty went up to the tip-top point first. When he came down he exclaimed, “I will give the king Gold!”
Then Lime climbed up to the tip-top point of the great cedar tree, and when she returned she shouted,“I will give the king Frankincense!”
Next, Whisker climbed up to the tip-top point of the great cedar tree and when she came down, she whispered, “I will give the king Myrrh!” for she was a little shy.
The fairies packed their gifts to give the new king and then began on their journey using the star as a guide. They wanted to find this king and worship him because they knew that this king was different. Fairies know these kind of things!
As they came into Lahasa the star that they had been following disappeared. The Fairies began to ask those living in Lahasa if they knew anything about the birth of a great ruler. It wasn’t long before everyone was talking about the birth of a new king.
At that time their was a troll named Herod who was king of Lahasa. And when Herod the troll heard this news he began to shout,“I am the King of Lahasa!” “ I am the King of Lahasa!”
This caused his servant Coal to shudder. Herod the Troll wanted to know more about this new king so he asked his servant Coal where he could find this king.
Coal squeaked, “According to the great owl the new King can be found in Tanabata.”
Herod the Troll sent Coal to go and fetch the three fairies.
“Tell me exactly what time this star appeared in the sky,” Herod the Troll roared for he wanted to know just how old the new king was. The fairies did not know that Herod the Troll wanted to destroy the new king, so they told him when they had first seen the star.
“Go to Tanabata,” Herod the Troll told them, “and find this new king. Then come back and tell me where he is, so that I can worship him too.” But the evil Troll did not want to worship him. He wanted to destroy him. The fairies left Herod the Troll and started once more on their journey. They were happy to see that the star was again there to guide them. They followed it as it slowly moved across the sky. At last it came to rest over a wooden hut where the baby king and his parents were living. The fairies were very happy to have found the king and they gave him their gifts and worshipped him. On their way home they were visited by God in a dream warning them not to go and tell Herod the Troll where the baby king was.
When the Troll realized that he had been tricked and that the fairies had gone home another way he flew into a rage and shouted, “I am King of Lahasa!” “I am King of Lahasa!”
“Go and kill all the baby boys that are under the age of 5!” And this was done.
Fortunately, God had visited the baby’s father in a dream warning him that Herod the Troll would try to kill the baby king. The father got up from his dream and while it was still night he and his wife left Tanabata. They traveled into Egypt where they lived until the death of Herod the Troll.
